WP: Глава МЗС Угорщини регулярно звітував Лаврову про засідання ЄС
According to The Washington Post, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto has been regularly calling his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov during breaks between EU meetings to report on the discussions taking place.
**Source**: Citing an EU security official, the publication notes that the Hungarian minister frequently provided "live updates on what was discussed" in EU meetings, as well as information about potential decisions.
"Due to these calls, for many years, Moscow has essentially been at the table during every EU meeting," said an unnamed European official.
For years, Viktor Orban's government has offered Moscow a vital insight into sensitive discussions within the EU, both through its officials and through Russian hackers infiltrating the computer networks of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry. This information has been corroborated by several current and former European officials, including Ferenc Fress, a former head of Hungary's cybersecurity service.
Opposition party leader Peter Magyar reacted to The Washington Post's publication, labeling Szijjarto a "traitor to Hungary."
"It is pure treason that the Hungarian Foreign Minister, a close friend of Sergey Lavrov, is reporting to the Russians almost minute by minute on every EU meeting. This person has betrayed not only his country but also Europe," he stated during a speech to supporters.
**Background**: According to European intelligence, amid falling ratings for the ruling Fidesz party, Russian intelligence services have been working on Orban to secure greater public support.
Parliamentary elections in Hungary are scheduled for April 12. New opinion polls show the opposition party "Tisa" leading by a margin of 14 percentage points.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump has once again expressed his public support for Orban ahead of the parliamentary elections, stating a "significant margin."
